Nat Peter NEILSEN was born 4 February 1883 at Linn Grove, Buena Vista County, Iowa, to Jens and Sine (PETERSEN) NEILSEN. In the 1885 Iowa state census, Nat is listed with his parents who are farming Section 33, Township 92 North, Range 38 West in Buena Vista County. Nat and his family moved to Minnesota when he was about 17 years old. In the 1900 census for Des Moines River Township, Murray County, Minnesota, Ned is still living with his parents. All of his younger brothers and sisters were born in Iowa (between February 1885 and November 1895).
Anna Hansine BUSK was born 20 August 1884 in Westbrook Township, Minnesota, to Christian Hansen and Anna Kirstine (HANSEN) BUSK. In the 1900 census of Dovray Township, Murray County, Minnesota, Anna is listed with her family. All of her brothers and sisters were also born in Minnesota (between May 1886 and February 1900).
The first time Ned and Anna saw each other was just before 1900 when Ned came up from Iowa with his father to look for land and they stopped in at the BUSK's. In 1902 Anna moved with her family to Summit, South Dakota. When they were going to get married, they drove a team of horses to Summit. Ned's sister Marie went with them. Ned and Anna were married 9 November 1904 at the BUSK home.
In 1931 Ned was the administrator of his mother's estate. In the probate papers Ned signed his name first as NELSEN and then later as NIELSEN. His brother Victor signed his name as NELSEN. The probate papers further state “...(All of the men named in this paragraph hereof being also variously known by the sir names [sic] of Nelsen, Neilsen and Nelson).” However, when Sine was the administrator of her husband's estate, she clearly signed her name as NEILSEN.
The couple lived all of their married life near Westbrook, Minnesota. They farmed in Des Moines River Township, Murray County, until 1943 when they moved into Westbrook. Anna died in Westbrook, 1 May 1973; Ned died in Westbrook, 12 January 1980. Both are buried in the Westbrook cemetery just north of town, with Ned's parents.
At the time of Ned’s death they had 48 grandchildren, over 100 great grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Before their marriages, Amy became a teacher and Ethel a registered nurse. Don served in the Army in WW II in Kodiak, AK, and in Germany and later worked for the Post Office. Nina and Ardys worked in an aircraft factory in Texas during WW II. Jim served in the Army and later was a district manager of Bell Telephone Co.
