Henry Algernon Hills was born on 23 March 1835 in Lewis County, New York. He was descended from William HILLS who came to Boston from England on the ship "Lyon" in 1632. His parents were Sidney Hills and Melissa M. LINDSLEY HILLS who were both also born in New York. Henry A. HILLS was their only son and in the county of his birth he was reared to manhood and acquired a practical education in the common schools, which was supplemented by a two years’ course in Fairfield Academy, Herkimer County, New York.
After completing his studies, he engaged in teaching school, first in New York, and this occupation he followed during the winter months for about thirty years, during which time he taught in but four different districts. In the school district of South Beaver Dam [Dodge County, Wisconsin], he taught fourteen terms and is gratefully remembered by many of his scholars who are indebted to him for faithful instructions they received in their early years. Soon after coming to Dodge County, he bought eighty acres of land, on which he has lived very comfortably ever since. He has been engaged in agricultural pursuits during the summer months and in the management of his farm has shown good judgment.
Professor HILLS has always been a staunch Republican and his first presidential vote was cast for John C. Fremont in 1856. He is independent as regards local politics, and votes for the man whom he considers best fitted for the office. He has been a member of Beaver Dam Lodge, I.O.O.F. for twenty-five years, and in all the affairs of Dodge County has shown himself active and public spirited. He has been a useful citizen and his career has been a most honorable one.
Mary Abigail WHEELOCK was born at Mannsville, [Jefferson County] New York, on 15 September 1841. When she was left an orphan at the age of 8, she went to live with her uncle David D. HOWE at Black River, [Jefferson County] New York. In 1854, at the age of 13, she went with her uncle to Beaver Dam, [Dodge County] Wisconsin. There on 11 April 1860 she married Henry Algernon HILLS who came to Wisconsin from New York. Mary WHEELOCK had been successfully engaged in teaching for some time prior to her marriage.
Henry Algernon HILLS died on 13 August 1908 in Beaver Dam (Dodge County) Wisconsin at the age of 73. Mary WHEELOCK HILLS died 12 years later on 20 February 1920, also in Beaver Dam (Dodge County) Wisconsin, at the age of 78. Both are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
