History

Thomas HARPHANT was born in England in January 1827. A blacksmith by trade, Mr. HARPHANT may have been married three times. In the 1860 census of Lafayette Village (Madison County) Ohio, there is a Thomas HARPHAN who is a blacksmith, age 32, born in England. The census indicates a value of $4500 for real estate and $100 for personal property. Living with Thomas HARPHAN is Charlotte HARPHAN, a 30-year old female who was also born in England, and two children; Cate HARPHAN age 5, and George HARPHAN age 3.

In the 1880 census of the Village of Selma, Madison Township (Clark County) Ohio, there is a Thomas HARPIN who is a blacksmith, age 52, born in England. The wife in this family is listed as Margaret, age 29, born in Illinois, both parents born in Virginia. There are four children in the family; James B. age 8, Thomas L. age 5, Lucey L. age 4, and William A. age 1. For all four children the place of birth is given as Ohio, the father's place of birth is given as England, and the mother's place of birth is given as Illinois. Also listed in the household is a 15-year old mulatto house servant, Mary NICKENS.

According to Dorothy Stout (William A. HARPHANT's granddaughter), William A. HARPHANT and his sister Lucy were orphans. Lucy later married a man named FUNDERBURG who was a mail carrier around New Carlisle, Ohio. The book, Descendants of Jacob and Eva (Boone) Funderburg lists a Laura Lucy HARPEN who was born 5 September 1877 and who was the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca HUGHES HARPEN. The book further notes that "Laura listed her occupation at the time of marriage as an 'artist.' When Laura was three years old her mother married Isaac Funderburgh of Miami County. At that time Laura was living in a children's home, however, she was raised by Isaac and her mother." Edward and Laura gave their second child a middle name of HARPHANT.

Edward William HAYSLETT's biography in the biographical history of Greene County, Ohio, indicates that Margaret HAYSLETT (who was presumably Thomas HARPHANT's second wife) "died in the '90's." But this seems inconsistent with Laura living in a children's home in 1880 (when she was three years old). It also doesn't explain how Rebecca HUGHES fits into this.

In the 1900 census Laura and Edward are living on Broadway Street, Springfield (Clark) Ohio with their daughter Celeste. Edward's age is given as 23 (born February 1877) and his place of birth as Ohio. He also indicates his parents were both born in Ohio. Laura's age is given as 22 (born September 1878) and her place of birth is given as Ohio. The census indicates that her parents were both born in Ohio also. Laura has had only one child, Celeste who was born December 1899.

In the 1910 census Laura and Edward are living in New Carlisle Village, Bethel Township (Clark) Ohio. Edward's occupation is given as mail carrier and the place of birth of Laura's parents is now given as 'Unknown.' The census indicates that Laura has had four children of which only three are still living and are in the same household; Celeste L. age 10, Ivan H. age 8, and Steven E. age 1. Also in the household is Laura's stepfather, Isaac W. FUNDERBURG age 72.

Also in the 1910 census, Thomas HARPHAN is listed as an inmate of the Madison County Infirmary, Union Township (Madison County) Ohio. His age is given as 73, born January 1827 in England. He is a naturalized citizen. William HARPHANT is living in Green Township (Clark County) Ohio with his wife Viola and his children May age 8, Charles W. age 6, and Robert R. age 4. William HARPHANT's place of birth is listed as Ohio while his parent's places are both listed simply 'United States.'
